LOS ANGELES, Mar. 19 – Today, MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving announced the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) as one of the Yield Giving Open Call’s awardees working with people and in places experiencing the greatest need in the United States. LAANE received $2 million.

“This gift is a gamechanger,” said Víctor Sánchez, LAANE’s Executive Director. On February 3, LAANE announced Víctor as the new executive director, replacing Roxana Tynan, who helmed the organization for over 12 years. A native Angeleno, Víctor is the former director of the Long Beach, nursing, and climate campaigns at LAANE. “Often, executive transition can lead to a period of decreased funding as new leaders work to build their own relationships, and unfortunately that trend is exacerbated for leaders of color. This gift is a ringing endorsement of LAANE’s more than 30 years of wins for working families, and will allow us to step into a new era with confidence and security.”

For more than thirty years, LAANE has worked alongside labor and community partners to create an economy in Los Angeles and Long Beach that is rooted in good jobs, thriving communities, and a healthy environment for all. LAANE fights for change through community organizing, building community and labor coalitions, research, communications, and policy work.

Most recently, on March 5th, LAANE and their partners in Long Beach worked to successfully pass Measure RW, a ballot measure that guarantees Long Beach hotel workers the highest minimum wage in the nation. The measure will raise those workers’ wages to $23/hour by July 20, 2024, with an escalator to $29.50/hr by 2028. This major victory ensures that hotel workers, who are the foundation of Long Beach’s tourism industry, can share in a small portion of that industry’s success.  LAANE’s campaign spoke to thousands of Long Beach residents and small businesses, demonstrating how critical direct civic engagement is to a healthy economy.

The Open Call process was administered by Lever for Change, a nonprofit affiliate of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. “We are excited that our partnership with Yield Giving has resonated with so many organizations,” said Cecilia Conrad, CEO of Lever for Change. “In a world teeming with potential and talent, the Open Call has given us an opportunity to identify, uplift, and empower transformative organizations that often remain unseen.”

In March 2023, Yield Giving launched the Open Call for community-led, community-focused organizations whose explicit purpose is to enable individuals and families to achieve substantive improvement in their well-being through foundational resources. The Open Call received 6,353 applications and initially planned for 250 awards of $1 million each. In the Fall of 2023, organizations top-rated by their peers advanced to a second round of review by an external Evaluation Panel recruited for experience relevant to this cause, and underwent a final round of due diligence. In light of the incredible work of these organizations, as judged by their peers and external panelists, the donor team decided to expand the awardee pool and the award amount.
