Water Campaign Community Organizer

Founded in 1993, LAANE is a leading advocacy organization dedicated to building a new economy for all – with a focus on women, low-income communities, and people of color. Combining dynamic research, innovative public policy, and deep coalition organizing, LAANE promotes an economic approach based on good jobs, thriving communities, and a healthy environment. Our work has included raising the minimum wage in 5 L.A. cities, overhauling our waste and recycling system to hold corporations accountable, and creating good, green jobs at LADWP. Campaign Description: LAANE is currently seeking a full-time Community Organizer for our Water Campaign, focused on the nexus of labor, equity, and the environment. As a proud member of the Our Water LA coalition, we’ve helped win billions to upgrade our water system, reduce climate impacts, and create union jobs accessible to those who need them most. We are now working to realize the promise of these victories, particularly for low income communities of color. We also know that deep organizing for additional policy and systems change is needed for a just transition – one where we confront climate change, empower communities, transform lives with good jobs, and ensure the human right to water. As part of LAANE’s Climate Initiatives, this campaign is connected with our RePower LA campaign for all Angelenos to access clean energy and good union utility jobs.

Position Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Campaign Director, the Community Organizer will recruit and develop leaders, contribute to campaign strategy, communicate and motivate existing and potential members, help advance policy change and workforce development priorities, and lead public actions. We are seeking a qualified professional who will be able to work well with unions, community organizations, environmental and environmental justice groups, and public agencies. Responsibilities include supervising interns. The Community Organizer will work directly with the Project Director and Research & Policy Analyst, as well as with community and labor allies. Reliable transportation is required.

Qualifications:

  • Social justice values/work experience: A strong commitment to racial and economic justice and the labor movement. Prefer experience with environmental/environmental justice, workforce development, community planning and/or displacement avoidance. Fluency in Spanish is ideal.
  • Excellent organizing strategy and campaign planning skills. Experience (2-5+ years) doing community and/or labor organizing, working with communities of color. Works well under deadline pressure and stays on top of multiple projects.
  • Working as a leader within a team: Ability to work independently and collectively within a team, possession of strong interpersonal communication skills. Responsibilities include supervising interns. Willingness to work longer hours and weekends when necessary.
