LAANE PoliciesOver the past 15 years, LAANE has played a central role in the passage of numerous laws throughout L.A. County. From living wage ordinances to superstore policies to health care legislation, these laws are helping to create a new economy based on good jobs, thriving communities and a healthy environment.
WAGES & BENEFITS For decades, the federal minimum wage has lagged behind basic increases in the cost of living, making working people poorer even as they work harder and harder. Living wage laws and other legislation advocated by LAANE and groups around the country have helped ensure higher wages for hundreds of thousands of workers while setting higher standards for government contractors and private businesses.
Good green jobs are critical to building a new economy. LAANE is partnering with local and national groups to advocate for policies that create good jobs and a healthy environment, from the port trucking system to the grocery industry to green buildings and manufacturing.
While improving wages for low-wage workers is vital, protecting decent-paying jobs is just as important. In Los Angeles, LAANE has led the way with laws to keep workers from losing their jobs when a company is sold, while other cities have passed laws to protect workers’ breaks or prevent violation of overtime regulations.
Billions are spent by cities across the nation in hopes of creating jobs, but without programs to ensure that local residents are qualified for them and actually get hired, the money is too often wasted. LAANE is in the forefront of a growing effort to work in industries such as construction, security and hospitality to create opportunities for low-income communities and the training necessary to take advantage of them.
When LAANE first negotiated with developers to win funds for child care, parks and affordable housing, the idea of community benefits agreements didn’t exist. Since then, LAANE has helped win tens of millions in benefits for L.A. residents, and community groups across the country have stopped saying either yes or no to development and started asking developers to say yes to community needs.
In trying to win good jobs and community benefits, one of the major roadblocks is public processes that don’t ask the right questions or allow for real public input. LAANE and many other organizations have addressed this challenge by helping to pass laws, including superstore ordinances and labor peace policies, that strengthen the democratic process and allow elected officials to protect the public good.
