Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE)
FOUNDED IN 1993, LAANE is at the forefront of a growing national movement to alleviate working poverty and rebuild the American middle class. Combining a vision of social justice with a practical approach to social change, LAANE is recognized as one of the nation's most innovative policy action centers and an authority on the working poor.
LAANE came to prominence by leading the effort to pass one of the country’s first living wage laws, raising wages for more than 10,000 workers. Soon after, LAANE pioneered a new approach to economic development, winning landmark community benefits agreements to ensure that large development projects address the real needs of communities.
In 2004, LAANE led the successful fight to defeat Wal-Mart’s $1.5 million initiative campaign in Inglewood and later spearheaded the campaigns to pass groundbreaking superstore legislation in Inglewood and Los Angeles, giving communities in both cities more control over the construction of big box stores. LAANE has also helped improve conditions for thousands of workers at LAX and in the Santa Monica tourism industry. LAANE is one of the founders of the Partnership for Working Families, which is helping communities across the country to secure quality jobs, affordable housing and other economic benefits critical to rebuilding the American middle class.
LAANE and its leadership have received numerous honors, including awards from the Mayor of Los Angeles, the Speaker of the California Assembly, the UCLA School of Law and the Los Angeles Roman Catholic Archdiocese.
